How does parrying work correctly? I can't seem to use it that good.

yeah it's a bit hard to use. You just need to press the button once when you see an enemy preparing an attack, but you need to wait until the very last moment before being hit if you want to do a perfect parry.

Yeah, i understand it now. But the weird/glitchy animation really just sucks. If the animation would be better i'd probably have understood parrying from the beginning. Anyways, great game.

Please mac a version for mac. i play on a macbook pro and would enjoy it.

This is a really fun game but it makes me feel like im in a theatre production with the quirky jokes. The one thing that was a problem was with the tutorial. I made a video on it and would love to hear what you thought about it.

(+2)

Decided to do a video about this beautiful game and I had a lot of fun. Enjoy :D

I just found this game and must say, I absolutely loved it!

Really wonderful graphics, runs real smooth, and love the ragdolls.

The only two things I felt a bit off, was the combat got a bit repetitive after a bit. Would be nice to see some different moves, but for a small game like this I can understand.
The second thing, which was a bit annoying, was that the game could use a keyboard tutorial instead of controller.

Anyway, really a wonderful game. Would love to see more!

As others, I too made a video on the game, feel free to have a look!

Hi,

For wich platform is the game?

Not specified : Platforms Windows

WINDOWS 32bit ??????????????????

Hi, it should be windows 64 bits. Did you have any trouble launching it?

(+2)

Great work guys. Hope you keep in touch after graduation and maybe make full game one day. Would definitely want to see it.

Here is me trying to kick flower pots and turkeys at the heads of actors pretending to be guards:

Wow! I just found this game. Really great for final project by students! For Malaysian people, you can watch I played this game in YouTube, recommended to play.

Better that Assassin's Creed only loses to history until because the game has 1 g

xD

Hi there! Great project, are there any plans to continue this? I work for a game publisher and we'd be happy to work with you in helping you publish to steam. If you're interested feel free to send me an email at deana@sedoc.net

I really enjoyed playing En Garde! Its a very cool third person slash em up! I made a video to share with the world of youtube. I hope you will enjoy it. Thanks for creating a really awesome game!

(+3)

This was really good. The use of the kick as a contextual environmental tomfoolery button, as well as the dash as being surprisingly versatile based on the environment, was an excellent change - felt like a more hilarious assassin's creed 2 or something. Though I did feel like with the freerunning I wanted some kind of divetackle button, especially with all the captains I was chasing.

Parry probably needs a more explicit visual marker or animation even when (or especially when) you do it with no incoming attack, so you can be better sure of the timing. It also seemed very easy to catch enemies into a kind of wake-up stunlock and deal massive damage when they were standing up.

Finally, enemy impacts didn't really feel like there was much oomph to them - the feeling when you did land a hit, or were hit, felt somewhat insubstantial.

I really enjoyed this little taster. Very Princess Bride/Errol Flynn.

BEST GAME I EVER PLAYED ITCHIO!

(+2)

That was a blast! I've always wanted a 17th century swasbuckler game, whether it's more gritty realistic or more tongue-in-cheek classic adventure flick, and this really scratchs that itch, if not for long. I'd love to see this or something like this becoming a full-length title someday, maybe with a more complex fencing system and expanded mechanics so it doesn't become repetitive (which is not a problem with the current short duration).

Cheers from a Spanish rapier fencer!

This game is so hilarious! Love its physics and the side comments from the guards! I also enjoy the fact that though it's the same story all throughout, En Garde gives different "experiences" to different players depending on their own game style ( I did not expect that chicken omgggg!)XD Wanted to play this on my laptop soooo bad, hence I did but only on the lowest settings here lol. I did try a custom medium-high settings afterwards, but experienced really noticeable FPS drops then, so only low settings for me (for now):( Looking forward to its optimization and full release ^_^ For anyone interested esp on what it looks like at the lowest settings and some funny moments, here goes:

I hope someone brings this to life into a full release. Everything I ever wanted in a game! I'd easily give $150 for a kickstarter.

(-2)

every time i click install is will start for 2 or so seconds then just stop. every other game will download but this. it looks like a great game but i cant play it. im on windows.if you know a way to help me that would be great.

(+2)

I really like this game. The kicking mechanic is so awesome and innovative! If only the enemy was a bit harder and the optimization was better, this would be even better. Cause' right now, all I have to do is stab the enemies until they fall, nothing's really forcing me to use all of my moves, and the game lags  near the end.

(+2)

Very cool prototype. I had so much fun trying it out :)
Kicking random objects in to enemys is really cool mechanic.

(+3)

En Garde! is currently in BETA and very promising! I can tell lots of love was put into this project by the environments and the interesting mechanics. The controls give the feeling of really being in a duel and require the player to get acquainted with the ins and outs. because to effectively hack and slash your way through your enemies, you must know how to wield a rapier and effectively throw insults.

The game is about 30 minutes long, has a visually pleasing environment and classical fiery guitars to accompany you.

One point of improvement could be that the game should allow for more use of the freerun function. There are a few other things that can be improved for a smoother experience but all in all the game feels complete and fully functional.

I love This Game

I can not wait till this game releases. The only thing I wish it had was that assassin creed vibe of free run. Other than that it's a fantastic game!

Game running in Wine + dxvk on Linux (see stats in the HUD).

~30 fps in open areas, and 50-60+ in more closed quarters.
Sapphire Pulse AMD Vega 56, 1920x1200.

This is so hilarious!

I have Windows 10 but the game is not installing.

(1 edit) (+1)

I have windows 10 but this game does not need to be installed?

How do you perform jumps using a keyboard? I think I figured, it's forward + space, though it's weird since space also works as dodge, so it's very erratic and half of the time doesn't work. I can't get on the ledge because of it to get into he palace.

(1 edit) (+1)

Actually you need to use free-running mode (by holding shift), it will make every jumps and ledge vaults automatically :)
Dodging to jump doesn't work perfectly and is only here to be used punctually in combat.

I checked, it's using Unreal Engine 4. It also works though with some glitches in Wine + dxvk on Linux. Would it be hard for you to make a proper Linux build? If you mostly used stock Unreal engine, it should be doable, since the engine supports it.

You can also try making a Vulkan build for Windows (instead of DX11 one) - it would work better in Wine.

(+1)

Hi! Yes, we might try to make a Linux build at some point :) Thanks for your interest

(-4)

I CAN'T DOWNLOAD THIS GAME, WHY?! (And I have Windows 10 pc)

Hi! Sorry, I have no idea why it doesn't work for you, I can't do much to help :(

(-2)

Very hard to launch. It downloaded just fine, but I guess I'm doing it wrong...

Hi, once downloaded you just need to unzip the .zip file and then launch the EnGarde.exe file. What is not working?

Thats what ive done as well, ive downloaded it and unzipped it but when it gets to the end of unzipping it and  it cant be completed for some reason ill share a screenshot for you. I gotta try to download it again tho.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rW2cfBXOWc0n53VylpbpHQ5iy0ijnxL6D3avalISP1Q/... SCREENSHOT OF FAIL UNZIP . (I hope it helps) Maybe its something on my end ?

Hi! Maybe try to unzip it with another software ? Winrar for example. I'm sorry I have no idea why it's not working

Ahh, gone are the days when a 750ti can be called a 'good' graphics card... Had to use all medium graphics and a lower, windowed resolution.

I don't know if this game is supposed to be humorous through and through, but if it is, then I'd call it a success! As with the likely next few commenters, I came across this game due to a YouTuber. That said, I played through the game myself. This review is based on my experience.

The first thing I noticed was the controls. Having no Xbox controller of my own, I played with keyboard and mouse. The controls were very responsive and easy to learn. In the first ten minutes, I had a firm grasp on them. Two downsides I noticed were the Repartee and the camera. Outside of combat, I could not use Repartee to restore my health, even if I was at one health unit. Also outside of combat, I felt as though my mouse sensitivity was too low for the camera movement, and there was no in-game setting to adjust it.

The dialogue suits a funny game, making plenty of references to pop culture and meme culture. Talking 'dead' guards is a definite plus, and I wish more humorous games would do that. There wasn't a single 'dead' guard line that wasn't funny. Two downsides here, as well: the overall sound quality and the accents. Some physics objects were a bit too loud, and the voices didn't sound super crisp. The accents seem too extreme in some moments and too lax in other moments, making it clear that whoever voiced the lines isn't a native Spanish-speaker.

The combat felt nicely balanced to me. Each sword strike felt strong, lending to the camera shake, audio, and character reactions. Most of the combat moves felt fluid and responsive; not sluggish at all. Even when completely surrounded, I didn't feel trapped. I had options. Allowing only Capitans and the boss to replicate certain moves otherwise limited to the player made them seem more formidable than the guards. Increasing the strike frequency of the boss compared to other enemies made the boss fight incrementally harder, but not unfairly so. Once again, two downsides: the physics of smaller objects seems a bit out of whack and I wish the guards didn't intervene in the boss fight. Small objects like plates, baskets, and light tableware had a tendency to fly extremely far and fast, like they needed more weight to them. The guards intervening prevented me from focusing on the boss, and it felt like a bit of a cop-out.

Beautiful visuals, funny dialogue, a comprehensible (albeit small) story... Overall, a fun game to play. I'd love to see or even be part of your next production.

Hi, thanks for the long and nice review! Don't worry, it's not your graphics card, our game is very poorly optimized haha :)

Oh, it's really not just your game. ^^; I'm finding more and more games that I can only barely run. Though you're right that optimization would help. I know the defeated NPCs are supposed to linger so they can give their one-liners, but perhaps clearing them after they're far enough away and out of sight would help. It does seem more laggy the more ragdoll entities there are.
